Following my article “Job search: my testimonial and advices”, I participated in a very interesting webinar that gave advice on how to stay motivated during a job search. The content was well presented, consistent and full of good advice. The reactions of some of the 69 participants in this webinar were interesting as well. These ranged from positive sounding optimism, to resignation which was brought on by a single point of view: constraints. Of course, in any situation, there may be constraints, but there is also what we call the ‘zone of influence’.

A job search is a marathon

During a “round table”, in videoconference, with human resources professionals, we talked about our vision of the awakening of human potential in companies.

We wanted to share our experiences on this subject and evaluate the possibilities for the future, a future that begins today.

We each had our own point of view, but our common dream is to have companies that are more innovative and creative in terms of working methods and more centred on people, and in the end… I dare to say it: happiness at work.

Soft skills are the character traits, aptitudes, human, social and interpersonal qualities that allow us to work and interact with others. These are our natural skills that generally cannot be learned in a course and cannot be quantified. They are the interpersonal skills, the emotional intelligence, that go hand in hand with the know-how (hard skills) when you are looking for a job.

Importance of soft skills

Soft skills allow us to progress in our career and be successful in our work. They are increasingly required nowadays. …

As a new mother in Switzerland, you are entitled to a minimum of 14 weeks (98 days) of maternity leave and you can expect to receive up to 80% or your income. Mothers cannot work during the eight weeks following the birth of their child. Returning to work after the birth of a child is a joy for some of us. We look forward to meeting our colleagues, spending time on our files, having coffee with adults and getting our noses out of nappies and bottles.

But for others, this return is more difficult, even a nightmare. There are many…

In Switzerland, the wage gap between women and men is 19.6% in the private sector and 16.7% in the public sector. Although the difference narrowed between 2012 and 2014, it increased again in 2016! As much as 43% of this difference cannot be explained by elements such as a different level of training, the number of years of service or position in the hierarchy. In Europe, the average gap…

A skills' assessment can be used at any time in your life, whatever your tasks, responsibilities, and job level. It can be particularly indispensable for anyone who has not worked for several years and wants to find a job. It will help to prepare a well-documented and solid approach to job applications. Furthermore, it can also help you refocus on certain phases of your career to date and encourage reflection on your career path and aspirations. …

The notion of “senior” is quite a relative term. It can have a positive connotation: in some companies the term Senior is added to the function of people who are 38 (!) and have no more than 10 years’ experience (Senior Communications Manager, etc.). It can also be used in a negative context, for example when we are told: “you are too senior for the position”. Here, I use the word in its broadest sense for everyone’s understanding.

In Switzerland, in 2017, more than 80% of people aged 50 to 65 were active in the labour market. In 2019, the…

In the event of a planned restructuring, some companies offer a social plan that allows employees to volunteer to leave the company and to benefit from a severance package that can amount to several months’ salary. This is a decision-making process that requires in-depth reflection, with psychological dimensions that should not be underestimated.

Assess the situation

It can be seen as unfair for companies to do so. It is up to employees to make the decision to stay or leave. It is therefore important to ask yourself the right questions: shall I take the severance pay and change jobs, lives…

You are looking for a job, but there is a lot to deal with: COVID-19, working from home, difficult unusual period, 250'000 job seekers in Switzerland, French-speaking cantons at the top. If all of this is not enough, it is raining! So, as it happens, I have also been looking for work for a few months. I am a freelance without clients and unemployed without unemployment benefits, but I am entitled to one benefit, i.e., group courses given by job coaches. Lucky me — participants are friendly. Unlucky me — all the courses are by videoconference. …

We know that people with emotional intelligence are more successful. Emotional intelligence is a set of skills that can be trained.

There are several avenues that we can do the following in order to learn how to recognise and manage our emotions:

  • how to put ourselves in other people’s shoes
  • how we can understand their emotions
  • how to react optimistically. Even under stress or in the event of conflict
  • how to convince others by communicating our ideas, objectives and intentions
  • how, if we manage to gain the trust of others, we will be able to influence and motivate them.
